I downloaded your Warm Ups, Contemp 1 and Contemp 2 some year ago and use them daily. I have really benefited from your programs and have become a better singer. Your tip on reducing strain seems also good for me. A problem is still the break at around Eflat and E. When practicing it runs very well from low to high, but when singing a song there is still a problem to not tension up around the break. Well, I´m working on it. Thanks for your work, Kind regards, Dieter

When you sing songs and run into "the break" check out just that line, and just the words that you are singing when you experience the break in your voice. Get to know the exact vowel sound of the word or words you are singing at the precise time of the break. Say the word several times. Focus on what the vowel SOUND is - your pronunciation of it. Recognize this is the sound you need to use when you sing the note (or notes) that were giving you trouble. Then sing the line or several notes with the lyrics using the vowel as your focus. This should resolve the problem I can coach you on this better than I can through written word, but try it. Also the reference chapter in The Contemporary Vocalist is the one called "Working with Words." and also the final chapter of the book there's an exercise you can do with your lyrics that will help. All the Best, Jeannie

Now another question I would have is which of your exercises are especially useful for production of overtones. In barbershop ( 4- part harmony ) the singers try to sing in a manner that produces overtones so that the result for the listener is that more than four people are singing and all the sung chords are "ringing". Which of your exercises in Contemp 1 and 2 should I concentrate on to reinforce the production of overtones? Thank You, Hans Dieter

Regarding exercises from The Contemporary Vocalist volumes 1 or 2 that assist in overtones: IF YOU ARE UP TO THIS POINT IN MY TECHNIQUE, Volume 1, CD 3 and Volume 2 CD 3. But, if you are not up to those CDs yet; if you have not fully achieved the aspects that come prior to those CDs, the exercises that are on those CDs will end up causing strain as the earlier elements needed in and provided from my method will be missing.
